Media Reflections

When I catch clips of Mad Men it takes me back to my early days in the advertising industry.  The media process was fairly straight forward, the client wanted to be on TV, the creative guys wanted to create TV so the media department costed out TV.

The media department, mainly women, was located far away from the creative floor, which housed eccentric personalities with offices filled with random pieces of furniture and objects; in some cases no furniture at all, as it hindered the creative process. Media folk didn’t speak with creative folk directly; everything was routed through the account people. Read More »

Mobile Advertising In The Mix

Author: Bessy Nikolaou | Date: March 23, 2012

Did you know that more than 80% of Canadians carry at least one mobile device and 45% of those mobile devices are smartphones? Our mobile devices are always on and always by our side. This presents powerful opportunities for advertisers to connect with the growing audience of connected consumers.

We are happy to support the following session on “Why Mobile for Advertisers”, led by Tina Barnes, who will answer key questions about the mobile opportunity:

  • Is mobile considered an advertising medium?
  • What are users doing on mobile devices and how do I target them?
  • When and how do I advertise to mobile users?

The Social Media Pool

Author: Catherine Maloney-Hofer | Date: February 20, 2012

I recently had a great customer experience at an independent retailer in Halifax and wanted to share my thoughts as I like to encourage and support local businesses. I made my way to “like” them on facebook and found their page had less than 60 “friends” and the last post was months ago.  So I wonder why have a facebook page at all?

Social TV – What does it mean for advertisers?

Author: Anne Beadle | Date: February 13, 2012

Have you seen Downton Abbey?  It’s a series airing on Sunday nights at 10pm on PBS.  It’s British and it’s set during World War I – just the type of series I’m a sucker for.  There is only one thing wrong – it airs at the same time as my favourite network show – The Good Wife.  That really shouldn’t be an issue with so many options now to watch shows on your own time – PVR, DVR, online viewing.  But I have friends who watch this show and we want to talk about it – I have to shush them up until I have time to catch up.  By then it’s too late and who cares about an episode of The Good Wife that aired a few days ago.

Super Bowl Commercials – Why don’t Canadians see them?

Author: Ellen MacKinnon | Date: February 6, 2012

There is always so much hype around the Super Bowl and for some of us, it’s not because of the game itself, we’re excited to watch the commercials (and the halftime show).  Unfortunately, for those of us in Canada, we miss out on a lot of the best commercials because they are shown on US Networks only.  WHY might you ask? Creating Smart Mobile Marketing Strategies

Author: Bessy Nikolaou | Date: October 31, 2011

I had the pleasure of presenting at this year’s AIM Halifax in the company of many esteemed marketers in Atlantic Canada and abroad. I was happy to see a great turnout to my session (despite serious competition from Julien Smith – co-author of Trust Agents)  on how to create smart mobile marketing strategies. Peppered with Atlantic Canadian mobile research, my hope was to leave the audience with a solid approach to developing mobile marketing strategies (not just tactics) to help create meaningful connections with ones consumer. Royal Wedding – Media Craze of 2011

Author: Anne Beadle | Date: April 20, 2011

“In the Spring, a young man’s fancy turns lightly to thoughts of love.”  And so it is with Prince William who will agree on April 29th to marry Miss Kate M.  People around the world will be able to share in their joy through a myriad of media channels.  Thirty years ago, when the world watched as Charles and Diana were wed, we did not have digital or social media.    Now, in 2011, whether you want to or not, it is virtually impossible not to be exposed in some way to the hype and spectacle of this event.   Read More »

5 Interactive Campaigns That Made Me Go Hmmm

Author: Bessy Nikolaou | Date: January 11, 2011

2010 was a year filled with a slew of innovative and interesting interactive campaigns and narrowing it down to my 5 faves was no easy feat. Some that made the cut were viral hits, while others I had to highlight simply for being entertaining, smart and incredibly engaging. And any reference to Star Wars is, of course, a given. So with that, I bring you what made me go hmmm in 2010… Read More »
